ITAC OVERVIEW
The ITAC was established in 2000 to serve a consortium
of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) with little or no
international activity establish study abroad programs in the Dominican
Republic. At the end of that year the ITAC received a grant from the GTE
Foundation to expand the HBCU Study Abroad Consortium and develop relationships
between U.S. businesses and minority colleges to enable the study abroad
component of ITAC to become financially self-sustaining.
Specifically, GTE was interested in their funding
being utilized to support the development of the ITAC’s international
internship program providing minority students in business and engineering with
the opportunity to work and study abroad. Between 1994 and 2000, students from
25 HBCUs had studied in the Dominican Republic in programs managed by the
International Education Resource Center.
The ITAC has assisted HBCUs in internationalizing
their curriculum by providing advice and technical assistance to faculty at
HBCUs in many different departments to establish internships and special
studies projects for undergraduates to earn credit in their major while gaining
valuable experience which can lead toward future employment.
The ITAC has not solely focused its attention on
HBCUs, as we’ve worked with numerous American Universities and large
consortiums such as SUNY, CUNY and CCIS. The organization as a whole is very
proud of its latest affiliation with the Phelps Stokes Fund in Washington D.C.,
as we expect many great things out of this new partnership.
